It’s that time of year – when afterschool programs all over the country are celebrating.
As most of you know, I’m a HUGE fan of afterschool programs. In fact, KidTribe started in afterschool.
Afterschool is so critical to kids’ development. Because of school budget cuts, it’s the only place where they’re getting their electives like physical activity, nutrition, gardening, art, music, dance, martial arts, yoga, wood shop, science, videography, chess, and free play. It’s where students get individualized attention as they’re helped with their homework… where they can let off some steam and socialize with their friends… where they can learn in hands-on through a kinesthetic approach… where they can work together in groups and develop leadership qualities… and they can reach for the stars and feel successful.
Afterschool also allows parents to focus on work without worrying about where their children are during those crucial hours when young people are most often victimized or tempted by negative influences. In many cases, afterschool gives children the only healthy meal they may eat all day.
Afterschool creates community. A community that should be celebrated. So hats off, afterschool programs! Thank you for the wonderful work you do!!!
