A couple weeks ago, the USDA revealed a whole new approach to designing and balancing our meals.
It’s called My Plate.
I like it. A lot.
The old-school Food Pyramid, although an informational and colorful food group icon, wasn’t very action oriented. My Plate is great because it easily identifies, in a visual way, what should be on every plate, every meal. Mostly veggies. A bunch of fruits. Some grains. A little protein. With a wee bit of dairy. I think it’s going to be really successful with children… and then the kids can help influence their parents. And then everyone can live happier, healthier lives.
Change is never easy… especially when years of habits, cultural influences, and tastebuds are involved. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this nation will embrace My Plate, will embrace making healthier choices, and will embrace the fact that ketchup is NOT a vegetable.
